The Packers put a flag in the ground for Trey Taylor, 36 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
That Davis pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Williams pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a long-term starter on the line, and a steal at that.
Xavier Legette at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value with a capital V on T'Vondre Sweat in the 58th overall pick, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, DJ James at the 66th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at Round 3, Pick 7 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Renardo Green in pick 88. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Kiran Amegadjie in the Round 3 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Cade Stover slipping to slot 91 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Ray Davis at par in the 104th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, James Williams adds a linebacker and leaves edge rusher untouched.
By-the-book stuff, Trevor Keegan at pick No. 138 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A quiet steal in No. 162: Kitan Oladapo for less than the market said. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Joe Milton III at slot 169 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They robbed the room for Tyrone Tracy Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had Trente Jones higher than the Round 6 slot, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Circle this one: Isaiah Davis at the 219th pick is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trey Taylor. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A real head-scratcher, Nick Gargiulo in the 245th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
A big swing on Omar Brown at No. 255, well ahead of any board in the building. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
