The Packers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Trey Taylor at the 226th pick regardless, 36 picks early. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Smith falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The Packers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a press-man option on the boundary. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A quiet steal in Round 2, Pick 9: Amarius Mims for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Somehow Kool-Aid McKinstry was still sitting there in the 42nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper slipping to pick 58 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor itch, scratched.
A straight-up fair deal on Dominick Puni at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Cedric Gray at the 104th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A running back of that caliber at the 105th pick is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Beaux Limmer at the 110th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Ben Sinnott went about where he belonged in slot 123. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Mohamed Kamara at pick No. 126 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Roger Rosengarten in No. 131; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 34, where James Williams graded well above the range. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Jarrian Jones at the Round 5 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value with a capital V on Kitan Oladapo in pick 162, a genuine coup. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Dallin Holker at the 169th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid a round early for Brandon Coleman in Round 5, Pick 34, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Luke McCaffrey at pick 171 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Travis. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cody Schrader in No. 175 is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jordan Jefferson at the 181st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
They robbed the room for Tykee Smith here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Trente Jones in pick No. 188 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reach for Jaylan Ford in the Round 6 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
They paid up for Logan Lee at No. 202 when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Rasheen Ali slid further than he should have, and pick 215 is lovely value for the running back. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Trevin Wallace at the 219th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Sam Hartman in slot 225 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Trey Taylor at the 226th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Good price on Edefuan Ulofoshio in Round 7, Pick 19, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They paid sticker price for Jalen Sundell in pick No. 245, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A big swing on Nick Gargiulo at pick No. 247, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value said wait; Omar Brown in No. 253 says they were not listening. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They took Ryan Watts at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
