Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Packers spent the 255th overall pick on Devin Leary, a name the board had a full 51 spots lower. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
That James pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Spending an early pick on linebacker with wide receiver and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Junior Colson at the 41st pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A want over a need in slot 62: Payton Wilson adds a linebacker while wide receiver and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
DJ James at Round 3, Pick 25 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Zak Zinter at pick No. 105 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Ray Davis in No. 110; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid up for Beaux Limmer at slot 113 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Ben Sinnott at par in the 126th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kitan Oladapo in pick 168. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Malik Mustapha at the 169th pick, value and slot in agreement. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Good price on Khristian Boyd in the Round 6 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A quiet steal in Round 6, Pick 27: Trente Jones for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jaylan Ford slid further than he should have, and No. 219 is lovely value for the linebacker. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Caedan Wallace slipping to pick No. 225 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at pick No. 239 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Trey Taylor in pick 245 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They did well to land Jalen Sundell in the 253rd pick, just ahead of his grade. It fills a real need, too.
A real head-scratcher, Devin Leary in Round 7, Pick 35 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
