The Packers did not so much draft Sam Hartman as overpay for him, 39 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. That Cowing pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Quantity was the play, for better or worse.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
Roman Wilson at Round 2, Pick 9 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Edgerrin Cooper at No. 50 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
By-the-book stuff, DJ James at pick No. 54 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Payton Wilson. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Braden Fiske at pick 66 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
Patrick Paul at the 74th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Dominick Puni in pick No. 88 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They read the board right and Michael Hall Jr. was the payoff at pick 90. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy little value on Christian Mahogany in the 104th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Calen Bullock at No. 106 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A straight-up fair deal on Ray Davis at Round 4, Pick 9, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They went early on Beaux Limmer in slot 111, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
They paid a round early for Mohamed Kamara in the 120th pick, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Roger Rosengarten, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jarrian Jones in pick 138 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 156 with a little surplus value in Kitan Oladapo. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They took Malik Mustapha at par in the 162nd pick, which is nothing to complain about. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They paid sticker price for Jordan Travis in Round 5, Pick 33, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They liked Tip Reiman enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 172. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They barely believed it either: Jacob Cowing still on the board at the Round 6 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had Khristian Boyd higher than the 186th overall pick, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on Jaylan Ford in slot 202; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Value with a capital V on Jase McClellan in No. 206, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A real head-scratcher, Trevin Wallace in the 210th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Sam Hartman in pick 219 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach for Edefuan Ulofoshio in the 221st pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trey Taylor this early at the Round 7 slot. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Jalen Sundell at Round 7, Pick 6 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A slide stopped in slot 245, with Daijahn Anthony worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Matthew Jones in pick No. 253 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Omar Brown in No. 255 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jowon Briggs a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
