The Packers did not so much draft Devin Leary as overpay for him, 53 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. McKinstry at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Amarius Mims at No. 25 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 41st overall pick is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good price on Junior Colson in pick No. 58, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Mahogany. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They took Cole Bishop at par in Round 4, Pick 5, which is nothing to complain about. A minor itch, scratched.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Braelon Allen in pick 110. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Mohamed Kamara at pick 126 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Malik Mustapha went about where he belonged in No. 169. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They paid a round early for Caedan Wallace in the 202nd pick, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A slide stopped in the Round 6 slot, with Jaylan Ford worth more than the price. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A premium they did not need to pay, Trevin Wallace a notch or two before his time. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A conviction pick on Trey Taylor at the 245th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Devin Leary in pick No. 253 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Devin Culp at Round 7, Pick 35 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
