Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Tahj Washington, the No. 188 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 252nd overall pick.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They will need Brown to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Hit on Graham Barton and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 32 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in Round 2, Pick 19, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Good price on Junior Colson in No. 58, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Christian Haynes in slot 64 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Patrick Paul at the 84th overall pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 88 with a little surplus value in Jaden Hicks. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A premium they did not need to pay, DeWayne Carter a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Khyree Jackson at the 126th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Sinnott at the 127th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Mohamed Kamara in No. 128 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Roger Rosengarten went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jarrian Jones. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Malik Mustapha at slot 169 squarely in line with his ranking. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Jordan Travis at pick 170 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Tanor Bortolini at Round 5, Pick 35 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
Tip Reiman at the 172nd pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A big swing on Joe Milton III at Round 5, Pick 39, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kamal Hadden in pick 189 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on Kendall Milton in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They liked Caedan Wallace enough to skip the value, taking him in the 202nd overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Trevin Wallace at slot 219 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jowon Briggs in No. 245, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
A quiet steal in the 247th pick: Edefuan Ulofoshio for less than the market said. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Tahj Washington in pick No. 252 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The roster fit checks out.
Value said wait; Omar Brown in pick 255 says they were not listening. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
