The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Jowon Briggs, taking him 50 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They banked enough surplus on Wallace to cover a lot of smaller sins. The Kader Kohou deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a No. 1 receiver at a price that makes it sweeter.
In slot 28 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Junior Colson in the 55th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It adds depth where they could use a little.
By-the-book stuff, Payton Wilson at pick 58 squarely in line with his ranking. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Trey Benson at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Christian Mahogany in pick No. 105. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Braelon Allen in slot 110, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Cole Bishop here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Mohamed Kamara at pick No. 128 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Roger Rosengarten in the 134th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Dallin Holker a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach for Tanor Bortolini in Round 5, Pick 24; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Malik Mustapha in pick 163 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They reached a country mile for Joe Milton III at the 169th overall pick, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Khristian Boyd at par in the 181st pick, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Dwight McGlothern at pick 184 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Walter Rouse in the 189th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A real head-scratcher, Trevin Wallace in Round 6, Pick 25 is miles ahead of his ranking. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Nathaniel Watson at the Round 6 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jowon Briggs well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy little value on Gabe Hall in No. 225, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at slot 245 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
A conviction pick on Trey Taylor at the Round 7 slot that the board grades a round light. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 255 with a little surplus value in Jordan Whittington. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
