The trade table was where it all came apart. The Packers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
If Milton III pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
There is no spinning it; the board won this weekend going away.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In slot 26 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid sticker price for Cooper DeJean in Round 1, Pick 28, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Roman Wilson in the 41st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had Edgerrin Cooper higher than pick No. 58, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Patrick Paul at the 91st pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Max Melton slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
James Williams at pick 126 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
By-the-book stuff, Roger Rosengarten at the 134th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Dallin Holker at slot 138 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Kitan Oladapo at pick No. 144 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A slide stopped in the 160th overall pick, with Mason McCormick worth more than the price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Isaiah Davis in pick 163 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid up for Braiden McGregor at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach for Fabien Lovett in No. 169; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Joe Milton III in Round 5, Pick 35 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Tyrone Tracy Jr. at the 172nd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Circle this one: Kamal Hadden at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Gabe Hall in pick No. 200, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaylan Ford in No. 202 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Trevin Wallace in the 219th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They jumped the gun on Trey Taylor, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
No drama and no debate, Sam Hartman went about where he belonged in Round 7, Pick 35. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
