The Packers put a flag in the ground for Jarrett Kingston, 94 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. They banked enough surplus on Wilson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
The board had J.J. McCarthy higher than pick No. 41, and the quarterback fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 58th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Malik Washington in pick 94. A need, and now a little less of one.
They did well to land Christian Mahogany in slot 105, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
DJ James slipping to the 110th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jarrian Jones. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Malik Mustapha went about where he belonged in slot 126. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Dylan Laube at No. 169 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A big swing on Joe Milton III at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaylan Ford at Round 6, Pick 27 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They paid a round early for Trey Taylor in pick 215, more than the board wanted. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Jarrett Kingston in the 219th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on JD Bertrand at pick No. 225, value and slot in agreement. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Value said wait; Jaylon Carlies in No. 245 says they were not listening. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Donovan Jennings at pick 253 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Omar Brown this early at pick No. 255. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
