Some picks age like wine; Trente Jones at pick 202 will need to, sitting 48 spots clear of his grade.
Getting Bullard where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Spending an early pick on safety with edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
J.J. McCarthy slid further than he should have, and pick No. 41 is lovely value for the quarterback. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They robbed the room for Kool-Aid McKinstry here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Somehow Javon Bullard was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier safety value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Cedric Gray in the 91st overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Malik Mustapha at safety with edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots open.
Nice patience on Dallin Holker, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 33. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Trente Jones at No. 202 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Trey Taylor at slot 219 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Drake Nugent at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid up for Frank Gore Jr. at the 255th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
