The Packers bet big and early on Donovan Jennings, 36 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. It is not that Mustapha is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
Getting Newton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They will replay Jer'Zhan Newton at slot 41 for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Junior Colson in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A straight-up fair deal on Cooper Beebe at pick 58, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaylen Wright at the 59th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Cole Bishop at pick No. 91 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid up for Mohamed Kamara at the 105th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They liked Hunter Nourzad enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 110. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Malik Mustapha adds a safety and leaves wide receiver and tight end untouched.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jordan Travis a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Nathaniel Watson went about where he belonged in the 202nd overall pick. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Trey Taylor at No. 219 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Ryan Watts slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Donovan Jennings at pick 255 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
