Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Hayden Hatten at slot 255 is 81 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Hicks at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a potential shutdown corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Junior Colson in the 49th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylen Wright. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board fumbled Jaden Hicks all the way to pick 88, and they scooped it up. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 3 slot is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A conviction pick on Ben Sinnott at No. 92 that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach on Mohamed Kamara in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
DeWayne Carter at No. 105 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Hunter Nourzad at pick 110 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jarrian Jones at Round 4, Pick 15 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No edge and no loss on Malik Mustapha in pick No. 126; it is a wash and a sensible one. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Mason McCormick at slot 169 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for Khristian Boyd in the 181st overall pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Sione Vaki here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaylan Ford in pick 219. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A premium they did not need to pay, Trey Taylor a notch or two before his time. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Dillon Johnson in the 225th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Sam Hartman in Round 7, Pick 25, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Donovan Jennings. The roster fit checks out.
