Green Bay Packers

The phones sank the Packers this weekend: D-.

by emc2feld · 2024 NFL Draft · 24 picks · 8 steals · 9 reaches
Value B-
Need B-
Trades F
Future D-

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Hayden Hatten in slot 255.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. On value alone, Sainristil makes the weekend a net positive.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.1 · Pick 33 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 25
A quiet steal in the 33rd pick: Graham Barton for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 42
No edge and no loss on Roman Wilson in pick No. 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 46
Junior Colson at pick 40 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 48
Edgerrin Cooper in Round 2, Pick 9 is fair value, right on his grade. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Jaden Hicks · S · rank 62
No drama and no debate, Jaden Hicks went about where he belonged in slot 58. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.1 · Pick 65 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 65
They paid sticker price for Cooper Beebe in No. 65, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 51
They robbed the room for Mike Sainristil here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 64
They barely believed it either: T'Vondre Sweat still on the board at the 89th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 102
The board had cheaper options than Ben Sinnott at slot 92, and it noticed. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 94
Quietly one of the better values of the day, MarShawn Lloyd at the Round 4 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · DeWayne Carter · DT · rank 110
DeWayne Carter in the 110th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Spencer Rattler · QB · rank 112
Nice patience on Spencer Rattler, who had no business lasting to pick No. 125. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 142
They liked Kitan Oladapo enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 4, Pick 26. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 150
They will replay Luke McCaffrey at No. 169 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Cedric Johnson · DE-EDGE · rank 190
Cedric Johnson in the 181st pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.27 · Pick 202 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 216
Joe Milton III at pick No. 202 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 215
Good price on Jaylan Ford in the 219th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R6.45 · Pick 220 · Trey Taylor · S · rank 230
They went early on Trey Taylor in slot 220, and the value did not follow. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Dylan McMahon · C · rank 240
They paid up for Dylan McMahon at the Round 7 slot when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.20 · Pick 240 · Kimani Vidal · RB · rank 210
Kimani Vidal in No. 240 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Ryan Watts · CB · rank 233
A tidy bit of business in pick 245, where Ryan Watts graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Jaylon Carlies · S · rank 270
Jaylon Carlies at Round 7, Pick 26 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.33 · Pick 253 · Jarrett Kingston · OT · rank 313
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jarrett Kingston. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.35 · Pick 255 · Hayden Hatten · WR · rank 336
Hayden Hatten in Round 7, Pick 35 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
