Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Packers spent pick No. 245 on Jarrett Kingston, a name the board had a full 68 spots lower. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
Watson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Spending an early pick on safety with wide receiver and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
If Graham Barton and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
Junior Colson in No. 41 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Value with a capital V on Kris Jenkins in the 58th overall pick, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Cole Bishop at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The board had cheaper options than Ben Sinnott at slot 91, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A surprising call. With wide receiver and interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent pick 126 on Malik Mustapha, a safety they were not short of.
A reach on Jordan Travis in No. 169; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on James Williams in slot 170; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Decamerion Richardson at the 175th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Taylor in the Round 6 slot, miles early. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Joe Milton III at pick No. 219 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Taking Nathaniel Watson in pick 239 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Jarrett Kingston in Round 7, Pick 25 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Frank Gore Jr. at the 255th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
