The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Xavier Restrepo, the No. 54 name on the board, sitting there at Round 7, Pick 20 like a gift left on the doorstep. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Carter pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with running back still on the board.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 19 they get a sticky cover corner, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 20th pick they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. More want than need.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 1, Pick 28 on Abdul Carter with running back unsolved.
Malaki Starks at the 51st overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The board fumbled Walter Nolen all the way to slot 60, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Ashton Gillotte at pick 84 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Tre Harris was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Jonah Monheim at No. 115 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Rylie Mills at Round 4, Pick 20 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick 147 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jack Kiser in the 148th overall pick, plain and simple. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Cameron Ward in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They barely believed it either: Shemar Turner still on the board at No. 159. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Jabbar Muhammad at the 179th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Bryce Foster in slot 180 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jordan Hancock in pick No. 211 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Taking Xavier Restrepo in the 212th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay CJ Dippre at No. 223 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
