Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Donovan Jennings at the 245th pick is 47 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
The Amegadjie value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Mustapha pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and running back still on the board.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
A slide stopped in No. 41, with Nate Wiggins worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Christian Haynes at par in Round 2, Pick 18, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Max Melton at pick No. 53 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaden Hicks in slot 58 is fair value, right on his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 3 slot is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A premium they did not need to pay, Mohamed Kamara a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Cedric Gray enough to skip the value, taking him in the 110th pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Brenden Rice in slot 120 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Malik Mustapha at safety with quarterback and running back open.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jordan Magee at No. 169 is the proof. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
AJ Barner in Round 5, Pick 35 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Decamerion Richardson in the 202nd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach on Trey Taylor in pick No. 219; the board had better options right there. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A wild overpay on Trente Jones in pick 225, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A real head-scratcher, Donovan Jennings in No. 245 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jordan Whittington slipping to pick No. 253 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jowon Briggs at the 255th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
