The war room fell hard for Chantz Williams, and it showed at the 211th pick: 59 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
Getting Sturdivant where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 19 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tate Ratledge. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jay Higgins in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They did well to land Wyatt Milum in Round 4, Pick 19, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, J. Michael Sturdivant in pick No. 131, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Maxwell Hairston in the 135th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took Jasheen Davis at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Zach Rice at No. 156 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Thor Griffith in pick No. 157; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A straight-up fair deal on Dorian Strong at pick 179, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Trikweze Bridges at slot 195 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Chantz Williams, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Deontae Lawson at the 220th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
