The Packers went off the board in a big way for Chantz Williams, 83 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
On value alone, Riley makes the weekend a net positive. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside. A real need, handled.
They will replay Malaki Starks at the 55th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Barrett Carter in Round 2, Pick 24 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They took Tate Ratledge at par in slot 58, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Tory Horton in the 87th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Trevor Etienne at pick 88. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
You do not let a quarterback like Jalen Milroe reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Rylie Mills at slot 119 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Oscar Delp in pick No. 120 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had cheaper options than Davison Igbinosun at Round 4, Pick 25, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach for Jonah Monheim in the 122nd overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 151 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid a round early for Alfred Collins in the Round 5 slot, more than the board wanted. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They liked Jared Wilson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 153rd pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Francisco Mauigoa in pick No. 154 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Maxwell Hairston in No. 155. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jack Kiser at slot 183 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A big swing on Connor Colby at Round 6, Pick 25, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in the 213th overall pick, with Jordan James worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at pick 215 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A real head-scratcher, Khordae Sydnor in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Chantz Williams in the 217th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Armand Membou well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
A conviction pick on Malik Spencer at Round 7, Pick 29 that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
