Nobody else had Giovanni El-Hadi anywhere near pick No. 217. The Packers did, by 101 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It nets out a thoroughly average C.
They banked enough surplus on Sanders to cover a lot of smaller sins. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
A cornerback of that caliber at the 55th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They liked Jay Higgins enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 3, Pick 23. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jonah Monheim at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
You do not let a wide receiver like J. Michael Sturdivant reach pick No. 151 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Shilo Sanders at the 152nd pick for years; that is how good the value is. A minor itch, scratched.
They talked themselves into Benjamin Yurosek at No. 153, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
By-the-book stuff, Fentrell Cypress II at the 183rd pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Jordan James in slot 202; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They did well to land Lander Barton in pick No. 211, just ahead of his grade. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A big swing on Antwaun Powell-Ryland at Round 7, Pick 21, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached into another round for Davin Vann, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, Giovanni El-Hadi in No. 217 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Zane Durant at the 221st overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
