The Packers torched the value chart for Cody Simon, taking him 37 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Getting Allar where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick-by-Pick
James Pearce Jr. in pick No. 23 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 25th overall pick they get a sticky cover corner, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board fumbled Kenneth Grant all the way to the 55th pick, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Omarion Hampton in pick 63, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Drew Allar here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nice patience on Oscar Delp, who had no business lasting to the 90th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Wyatt Milum. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board had Smael Mondon Jr. higher than No. 119, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Collin Oliver in the 120th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Rylie Mills reach slot 151 and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nick Emmanwori at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Zach Rice at Round 6, Pick 23 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Theo Wease Jr. at pick 186 when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cody Simon at the 215th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A conviction pick on Thor Griffith at slot 216 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
A reach on Savion Williams in the Round 7 slot; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
