You build a draft on nights like this. Emeka Egbuka had no business being available in the 87th overall pick, and the Packers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It bottoms out at a F.
Simon has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The whole projection now runs through Jalen Milroe; hit there and everything else looks smarter.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd pick they get a true top target at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a bendy edge with upside, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 26 they get a ballhawk on the outside at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In No. 27 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
In pick 29 they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Steal is underselling it; Colston Loveland at the 55th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
They barely believed it either: Emeka Egbuka still on the board at pick No. 87. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Tate Ratledge at the 88th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nothing to complain about; Wyatt Milum went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Domani Jackson. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value with a capital V on Smael Mondon Jr. in Round 4, Pick 26, a genuine coup. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Somehow Conner Weigman was still sitting there in the 133rd overall pick, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Dasan McCullough at No. 151 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They paid a round early for Julian Fleming in pick No. 155, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A conviction pick on Caden Prieskorn at pick 157 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
A reach on Tyler Baron in the 173rd pick; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Gentry Williams in pick 183 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had cheaper options than Zy Alexander at the Round 6 slot, and it noticed. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on Theo Wease Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They liked Alfred Collins enough to skip the value, taking him in the 197th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Hunter Wohler at par in the 211th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Armand Membou at Round 7, Pick 23 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jordan James at slot 216 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A premium they did not need to pay, Thor Griffith a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A big swing on Fentrell Cypress II at the 221st pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cody Simon at pick 223 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
