Call it larceny. Conner Weigman sat on the board until the 183rd overall pick, and the Packers did not need to be asked twice. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Bywater has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher, cornerback and other spots went begging.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 23 they get a rangy last line of defense, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Jalen Milroe at No. 55 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Fair-plus on Josh Simmons, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
A curious use of pick No. 119. Edge rusher, cornerback and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Nick Emmanwori did not.
Circle this one: Tahj Brooks at pick 151 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Somehow Conner Weigman was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Ben Bywater, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
