You can draft well and still miss the point. The Cowboys did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to cornerback, which was the need that mattered most. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They are betting Cook proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The Davis pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 26 they get a disruptor off the edge. More want than need.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 58 with a little surplus value in Dontay Corleone. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nicholas Singleton at Round 3, Pick 26 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, J.C. Davis at the 122nd pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They went early on Brady Cook in the 154th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Will Sheppard at slot 186, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
