Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Conner Weigman, the No. 80 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 124. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Every board in the league had Kight lower, and that gap is the story.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Princely Umanmielen at the 18th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Clay Webb at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Bear Alexander at par in pick No. 52, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A premium they did not need to pay, Quinshon Judkins a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tacario Davis at Round 4, Pick 11 is the proof. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Taking Conner Weigman in the 124th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Samuel Brown in pick 155 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on David Bailey. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A straight-up fair deal on Nick Martin at Round 5, Pick 31, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
You do not let a wide receiver like De'Corian Clark reach pick No. 170 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Amari Kight in pick 171 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tyler Baron in No. 192 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
A reach on Jamaree Caldwell in the 208th pick; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
A quarterback of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
