Green Bay Packers

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Packers and Allar: D+.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent Round 7, Pick 41 on Sage Ryan, a name most had 65 spots down the list.

That Allar pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.

Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.24 · Pick 24 · Will Johnson · CB · rank 5
In the 24th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Josh Conerly Jr. · OT · rank 32
The board fumbled Josh Conerly Jr. all the way to No. 55, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.22 · Pick 86 · Jalon Walker · LB-EDGE · rank 66
Jalon Walker at pick 86 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.24 · Pick 125 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 67
You do not let a running back like TreVeyon Henderson reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.25 · Pick 126 · Maxwell Hairston · CB · rank 97
Maxwell Hairston in pick 126 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.26 · Pick 127 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 128
Jihaad Campbell in the 127th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.27 · Pick 128 · Julian Fleming · WR · rank 130
They paid sticker price for Julian Fleming in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.31 · Pick 132 · Dontay Corleone · DT · rank 116
Dontay Corleone slipping to slot 132 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.5 · Pick 143 · Ben Yurosek · TE · rank 150
Ben Yurosek at the 143rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
R5.13 · Pick 151 · Drew Allar · QB · rank 68
Drew Allar at pick No. 151 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.14 · Pick 152 · Tory Horton · WR · rank 159
A straight-up fair deal on Tory Horton at No. 152, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.22 · Pick 160 · Bryce Foster · C · rank 152
They read the board right and Bryce Foster was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 22. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.25 · Pick 163 · Jared Wilson · C · rank 189
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jared Wilson in the 163rd pick, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.22 · Pick 197 · Garrett Dellinger · OG · rank 199
Garrett Dellinger at slot 197 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.26 · Pick 201 · Luke Lachey · TE · rank 197
Nothing to complain about; Luke Lachey went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.9 · Pick 223 · Tony Grimes · CB · rank 209
Tony Grimes slid further than he should have, and pick 223 is lovely value for the cornerback. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.15 · Pick 229 · Jasheen Davis · DL-EDGE · rank 251
A real head-scratcher, Jasheen Davis in the 229th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.17 · Pick 231 · Alfred Collins · DL · rank 272
They reached a country mile for Alfred Collins at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.26 · Pick 240 · Bru McCoy · WR · rank 249
They went early on Bru McCoy in No. 240, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
R7.29 · Pick 243 · Power Echols · LB · rank 258
A reach on Power Echols in Round 7, Pick 29; the board had better options right there. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
R7.34 · Pick 248 · Trevor Etienne · RB · rank 301
They reached into another round for Trevor Etienne, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.41 · Pick 255 · Sage Ryan · S · rank 320
Sage Ryan at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A minor need, but a need all the same.
