There is reaching, and then there is Xavian Sorey Jr. at Round 7, Pick 23. The Packers jumped the board by 91 and dared it to prove them wrong. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
Beck at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Isaiah Bond in Round 2, Pick 23, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Quinn Ewers at No. 86 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Abdul Carter at the Round 3 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Mykel Williams in slot 88 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Barrett Carter at the 89th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Quinshon Judkins in pick 90. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Domani Jackson at pick 91 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nick Emmanwori in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Carson Beck in No. 101 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Jayden Higgins at the 120th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Nazir Stackhouse in Round 4, Pick 23, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
Steal is underselling it; Jamon Dumas-Johnson at slot 194 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
No drama and no debate, Bryson Nesbit went about where he belonged in pick No. 197. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid sticker price for Julian Fleming in the 199th pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Barion Brown in the 209th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Mason Taylor in Round 7, Pick 7, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cody Simon in slot 224 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Jasheen Davis at pick 236 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached into another round for Xavian Sorey Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A real head-scratcher, Zane Durant in No. 245 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for Trevor Etienne at pick No. 248, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tony Grimes at the 254th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
