The tape said wait; the Packers did not. Fred Davis went at pick No. 245, a good 146 picks before the board was ready. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
They banked enough surplus on Hancock to cover a lot of smaller sins. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get an anchor for the defensive front at a price that makes it sweeter.
In the 28th pick they get a cornerstone up front, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Domani Jackson in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Malaki Starks in pick No. 97 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board fumbled Tre Harris all the way to the 98th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jake Majors in slot 99, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Colston Loveland at the 127th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Steal is underselling it; TreVeyon Henderson at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a linebacker like Deontae Lawson reach Round 5, Pick 25 and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Somehow Harold Perkins Jr. was still sitting there in No. 183, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Kevin Winston Jr. in slot 202 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They will replay Jonah Monheim at pick 226 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A conviction pick on Kyren Lacy at the 232nd pick that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Julian Fleming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Fred Davis at No. 245 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Thor Griffith well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
Jordan Hancock at Round 7, Pick 37 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
