The war room fell hard for Marcus Dumervil, and it showed at the 250th overall pick: 61 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
Getting Singleton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Ramsey pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Somehow Nick Emmanwori was still sitting there in the 59th overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Kamari Ramsey in pick 91 leaves edge rusher for later.
Tyleik Williams in pick No. 92 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jalen Royals in the Round 3 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Deone Walker in the 94th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
TreVeyon Henderson at pick 95 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Jihaad Campbell in the 96th pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 98 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Maxwell Hairston in Round 3, Pick 35 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Jake Majors at No. 128 for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Kevin Winston Jr. at No. 162 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Steal is underselling it; Danny Stutsman at the 169th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They barely believed it either: Savion Williams still on the board at the 170th pick. It fills a real need, too.
They took Dont'e Thornton Jr. at par in pick No. 171, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Smael Mondon Jr. in slot 183, plain and simple. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
You do not let a running back like Nicholas Singleton reach pick 190 and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Harold Perkins Jr. at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Cam Skattebo at Round 6, Pick 34 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jaishawn Barham at the Round 6 slot is the proof. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They robbed the room for Jared Wilson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board fumbled Jonah Monheim all the way to Round 7, Pick 18, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on KJ Jefferson at pick No. 241, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Ben Yurosek at slot 248 is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Marcus Dumervil at pick 250 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, Oscar Delp at No. 251 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
