The Chargers banked a tidy surplus when Edefuan Ulofoshio lasted to Round 7, Pick 33, a few spots past his grade.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Johnson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 5 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Cooper DeJean slid further than he should have, and pick 37 is lovely value for the cornerback. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Jaylen Wright went about where he belonged in pick No. 69. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Mekhi Wingo in slot 105 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They jumped the gun on Theo Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mason McCormick. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Cornelius Johnson in No. 181; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Eric Watts at pick 225 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Edefuan Ulofoshio slipping to the 253rd overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
