Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Ja'Tavion Sanders got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at Round 3, Pick 4. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Adding Tyler Lockett by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Bottom line, with Dallas Turner leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 16 they get juice off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Troy Franklin at pick No. 34 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow Bralen Trice was still sitting there in slot 43, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at pick 68 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Dominick Puni went about where he belonged in the 103rd overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Good price on Cooper Beebe in Round 4, Pick 18, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Travis. The roster fit checks out.
Nothing to complain about; Jacob Cowing went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Isaiah Davis slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
