If confidence were a draft strategy, the Chiefs would have aced it. Malik Washington at pick No. 94 is 25 spots clear of where he belonged. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped offensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Smith-Wade pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
A slide stopped in pick 63, with Ja'Tavion Sanders worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Malik Washington in No. 94, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Justin Eboigbe at the 131st overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A straight-up fair deal on Cody Schrader at Round 5, Pick 25, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They left a pile of value on the table to take JD Bertrand this early at the 171st pick. It fills a real need, too.
They read the board right and Chau Smith-Wade was the payoff at slot 175. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Kenny Logan Jr. in slot 209 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jordan Johnson in No. 252 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
