When a board-topper like Kalel Mullings slides to pick No. 185, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not.
If Nelson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
With edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
They took Derrick Harmon at par in pick 34, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jihaad Campbell in the 39th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
A tidy little value on Alfred Collins in No. 67, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach for Darien Porter in pick No. 68; a little patience would have been rewarded. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jack Nelson this early at slot 79. It fills a real need, too.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Danny Stutsman in the Round 4 slot leaves edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots for later.
Jake Majors in the 138th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They barely believed it either: Kalel Mullings still on the board at the 185th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
