You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took J.J. Weaver at the Round 7 slot, roughly 114 spots before his name belonged.

They banked enough surplus on Singleton to cover a lot of smaller sins. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.

They will answer for taking linebacker early while safety, quarterback and other spots went begging.

A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Tetairoa McMillan · WR · rank 6
In pick 5 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 40
Jihaad Campbell in No. 34 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Jared Ivey · DE-EDGE · rank 80
They paid a round early for Jared Ivey in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Hollin Pierce · OT · rank 111
Hollin Pierce at pick No. 79 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
R3.33 · Pick 97 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 118
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jack Nelson this early at the 97th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.35 · Pick 99 · Danny Stutsman · LB · rank 87
A surprising call. With safety, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent Round 3, Pick 35 on Danny Stutsman, a linebacker they were not short of.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · Daylen Everette · CB · rank 119
They liked Daylen Everette enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 103. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.8 · Pick 109 · Elic Ayomanor · WR · rank 96
They let Elic Ayomanor come to them and pounced at pick 109. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.1 · Pick 138 · DeMonte Capehart · DT · rank 153
DeMonte Capehart at the Round 5 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.3 · Pick 140 · Nicholas Singleton · RB · rank 102
Somehow Nicholas Singleton was still sitting there in the 140th overall pick, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · J.J. Weaver · LB-EDGE · rank 333
A big swing on J.J. Weaver at slot 219, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Gentry Williams · CB · rank 274
They talked themselves into Gentry Williams at Round 7, Pick 4, and the board did not agree. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
