Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent the Round 3 slot on Ozzy Trapilo, a name most had 69 spots down the list.
The Lawson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Landon Jackson in pick No. 34. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Good price on Derrick Harmon in No. 36, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jihaad Campbell at the 46th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Alfred Collins in slot 65 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Ozzy Trapilo in pick 67 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid up for Elic Ayomanor at No. 84 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They went early on Daylen Everette in pick 103, and the value did not follow. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Circle this one: Deontae Lawson at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
You do not let a running back like Raheim Sanders reach Round 6, Pick 10 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
