The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Raheim Sanders, the No. 147 name on the board, in pick No. 219. A weekend of give and take that grades a C.
If Wedig pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Spending an early pick on linebacker with safety, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
If Tetairoa McMillan and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
Tetairoa McMillan at the Round 1 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Derrick Harmon at Round 2, Pick 14 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jihaad Campbell in the 67th overall pick, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kyle Kennard. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jack Nelson in slot 83 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Nice patience on Jake Majors, who had no business lasting to pick 103. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Danny Stutsman in No. 122 leaves safety, quarterback and other spots for later.
Domani Jackson slid further than he should have, and the 138th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They barely believed it either: Raheim Sanders still on the board at the Round 7 slot. It fills a real need, too.
A slide stopped in the 220th pick, with Jonah Monheim worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trey Wedig. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
