The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Nicholas Singleton, the No. 100 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 7 slot like a gift left on the doorstep.
The Wedig reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
Somehow Jihaad Campbell was still sitting there in pick 69, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Deone Walker at slot 77 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Darien Porter at the 78th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Elic Ayomanor is a better player than the 105th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Danny Stutsman in pick No. 143 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A running back of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 1 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jonah Monheim slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Trey Wedig at Round 7, Pick 25 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
