This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Cam Skattebo, the No. 114 name on the board, stolen at the 219th overall pick. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
They will need Jones Jr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Hit on Will Campbell and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 8 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
They robbed the room for Nick Emmanwori here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Jihaad Campbell in the 39th overall pick, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
You do not let a tight end like Tyler Warren reach pick 67 and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nothing to complain about; Alfred Collins went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Deone Walker. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Emery Jones Jr. in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Fair-plus on Elic Ayomanor, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Savion Williams at slot 106, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Davison Igbinosun at pick 138, and the board did not agree. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They barely believed it either: Nicholas Singleton still on the board at pick No. 183. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Cam Skattebo all the way to No. 219, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jonah Monheim in the Round 7 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reach for Kamren Fabiculanan in Round 7, Pick 22; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
