The Patriots let Singleton fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Nicholas Singleton, the No. 105 name on the board, in the 186th overall pick.

Every board in the league had Trapilo lower, and that gap is the story. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.9 · Pick 9 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 16
In the 9th pick they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Derrick Harmon · DT · rank 34
No drama and no debate, Derrick Harmon went about where he belonged in pick No. 35. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 40
Jihaad Campbell in the 44th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Dylan Fairchild · OG · rank 59
They read the board right and Dylan Fairchild was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 11. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Xavier Watts · S · rank 49
Xavier Watts at No. 78 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.6 · Pick 107 · Elic Ayomanor · WR · rank 98
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Elic Ayomanor at slot 107. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.11 · Pick 112 · Ozzy Trapilo · OT · rank 137
They reached a country mile for Ozzy Trapilo at pick 112, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.4 · Pick 142 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 109
The board fumbled Smael Mondon Jr. all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R6.11 · Pick 186 · Nicholas Singleton · RB · rank 105
You do not let a running back like Nicholas Singleton reach the Round 6 slot and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.25 · Pick 200 · Bryce Foster · C · rank 199
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bryce Foster. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.5 · Pick 219 · Savion Williams · WR · rank 231
A conviction pick on Savion Williams at the 219th pick that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
