Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Nicholas Singleton, the No. 100 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 188th pick. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They are betting Carroll proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Stutsman pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman and quarterback still on the board.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a problem off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 44 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jihaad Campbell in slot 69 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They talked themselves into Hollin Pierce at Round 3, Pick 16, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They let Elic Ayomanor come to them and pounced at pick 105. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A curious use of the 114th pick. Interior defensive lineman and quarterback needed the pick; a linebacker in Danny Stutsman did not.
Taking Sonny Styles in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Jake Majors at the 148th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Quinn Carroll in slot 171 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nicholas Singleton at No. 188 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A big swing on Xavier Truss at Round 7, Pick 1, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
They robbed the room for Raheim Sanders here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jake Briningstool at the 232nd overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
