You could see the war room lean forward. Nicholas Singleton at the 217th pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. It grades a D+, and the process earned it.
The Crenshaw-Dickson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
It is not that Stutsman is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 14th pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jonah Savaiinaea in pick 39 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A need, and now a little less of one.
Circle this one: Nick Emmanwori at slot 40 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jihaad Campbell in the 69th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Elic Ayomanor at Round 3, Pick 32 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Blake Miller at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A slide stopped in No. 110, with Maxwell Hairston worth more than the price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Danny Stutsman in pick No. 116 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
Fair-plus on Savion Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steal is underselling it; Jake Majors at the 143rd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Sonny Styles in pick No. 170 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson this early at slot 201. It fills a real need, too.
You do not let a running back like Nicholas Singleton reach pick 217 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
