Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Nicholas Singleton, the No. 100 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 217th overall pick.
The Baker pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Spending an early pick on cornerback with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 15th overall pick they get a true top target, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: T.J. Sanders for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nick Emmanwori in the 45th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Darien Porter in No. 69 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Hollin Pierce in Round 3, Pick 13 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Elic Ayomanor in slot 102 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Danny Stutsman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take Daylen Everette, a cornerback that was not the priority.
A big swing on Rylie Mills at slot 114, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Sonny Styles in the 143rd overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value said wait; Tosh Baker in the 148th pick says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Nicholas Singleton in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Le'Veon Moss at No. 220 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They barely believed it either: Jared Wilson still on the board at pick No. 232. A need, and now a little less of one.
