If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Jay Toia at the 193rd overall pick is 132 spots clear of where he belonged. The final tally is a middling C.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 8 they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Nic Scourton at pick 39 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tate Ratledge in the 40th pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They did well to land Jihaad Campbell in the Round 2 slot, just ahead of his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Darien Porter at No. 71 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jake Majors at pick No. 107. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Circle this one: Jordan James at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Danny Stutsman at pick 142 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
The board fumbled Sonny Styles all the way to the 151st overall pick, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Jay Toia at Round 6, Pick 18, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
