Call it larceny. Nicholas Singleton sat on the board until pick No. 217, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
They will need Weaver to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
If Abdul Carter and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.4
· Pick 4
· Abdul Carter
· DE-EDGE
· rank 7
In pick No. 4 they get a bendy edge with upside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.6
· Pick 38
· Derrick Harmon
· DT
· rank 33
Derrick Harmon at the 38th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.5
· Pick 69
· Jihaad Campbell
· LB
· rank 40
Jihaad Campbell at slot 69 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.16
· Pick 80
· Hollin Pierce
· OT
· rank 109
Hollin Pierce at the 80th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.4
· Pick 105
· Ozzy Trapilo
· OT
· rank 129
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ozzy Trapilo in the Round 4 slot, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.10
· Pick 111
· Elic Ayomanor
· WR
· rank 96
Elic Ayomanor is a better player than the 111th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.26
· Pick 127
· Domani Jackson
· CB
· rank 128
Domani Jackson in Round 4, Pick 26 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.6
· Pick 143
· Jake Majors
· C
· rank 93
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 143 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.1
· Pick 217
· Nicholas Singleton
· RB
· rank 99
Steal is underselling it; Nicholas Singleton at No. 217 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
R7.4
· Pick 220
· J.J. Weaver
· LB-EDGE
· rank 339
J.J. Weaver in pick 220 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.25
· Pick 241
· Raheim Sanders
· RB
· rank 146
They robbed the room for Raheim Sanders here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
