New England Patriots

Grand theft in the Round 6 slot: the Patriots steal Skattebo and grade out a B.

You could see the war room lean forward. Cam Skattebo at the 195th pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. The bottom line is a respectable B.

They are betting Truss proves the room right and everyone else wrong. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Mykel Williams · DE-EDGE · rank 16
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 14
They barely believed it either: Tyler Warren still on the board at pick No. 38. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 40
Jihaad Campbell is a better player than pick 49 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Ozzy Trapilo · OT · rank 92
A real head-scratcher, Ozzy Trapilo in Round 3, Pick 5 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Darien Porter · CB · rank 79
A straight-up fair deal on Darien Porter at No. 77, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Savion Williams · WR · rank 98
Savion Williams at the 105th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.6 · Pick 145 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 111
Steal is underselling it; Smael Mondon Jr. at the 145th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R6.17 · Pick 195 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 105
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach slot 195 and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.1 · Pick 219 · Raheim Sanders · RB · rank 155
Raheim Sanders at the 219th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.4 · Pick 222 · Xavier Truss · OT · rank 304
A big swing on Xavier Truss at pick 222, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.16 · Pick 234 · Jordan Hancock · S · rank 204
The board fumbled Jordan Hancock all the way to Round 7, Pick 16, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.22 · Pick 240 · Torricelli Simpkins III · OG · rank 252
Torricelli Simpkins III at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
