Call it larceny. Tahj Brooks sat on the board until the Round 7 slot, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. It nets out a thoroughly average C.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Stutsman pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, safety and other spots.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Trapilo pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick-by-Pick
Mason Graham at No. 4 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jihaad Campbell at pick No. 38 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They reached into another round for Ozzy Trapilo, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Charles Grant in the 77th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, safety and other spots still to address, they spent pick 105 on Danny Stutsman, a linebacker they were not short of.
Hollin Pierce in the 111th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Shemar Turner in slot 145. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A running back of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 1 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Roc Taylor at the 222nd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jake Briningstool at Round 7, Pick 22 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
