The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Brashard Smith slide 41 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They will need Jackson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 17th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Mike Green at pick 38 is the proof. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jihaad Campbell in No. 45. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
By-the-book stuff, Darien Porter at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid up for Ozzy Trapilo at slot 77 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Charles Grant at par in Round 3, Pick 23, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Savion Williams at pick No. 105 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jake Majors in the 111th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
O'Donnell Fortune at pick 145 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A running back of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Cam Jackson at the 194th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jack Kiser at Round 6, Pick 38 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
