The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: DJ Giddens, the No. 165 name on the board, sitting there at pick 222 like a gift left on the doorstep.
Reaching for Crenshaw-Dickson left real value on the table behind him. The phones were where this weekend was really won. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Tyler Guyton deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a disruptor off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid sticker price for Jihaad Campbell in slot 38, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Elic Ayomanor in the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Ozzy Trapilo in the 77th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
Darien Porter at pick 82 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick No. 219 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
