Call it larceny. DJ Giddens sat on the board until the 217th overall pick, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jihaad Campbell. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They will replay Tyler Warren at the 45th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board fumbled JT Tuimoloau all the way to the 69th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Darien Porter at slot 77 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Savion Williams at Round 4, Pick 4. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They barely believed it either: Charles Grant still on the board at pick No. 115. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nick Nash in No. 144 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
DJ Giddens in pick 217 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Raheim Sanders here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
