The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 144th overall pick on Clay Webb a full 101 spots early. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Mafah at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Wyatt Milum. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jalon Walker in pick No. 45, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jalen Royals in slot 69 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jayden Higgins at Round 3, Pick 13 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cam Skattebo in No. 106. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Clay Webb this early at pick No. 144. The roster fit checks out.
Phil Mafah in the 217th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach for Teddye Buchanan in No. 220; a little patience would have been rewarded. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Donovan Edwards in Round 7, Pick 16 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nice patience on Ja'Corey Brooks, who had no business lasting to pick 238. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
