The Texans did not so much draft Jamaree Caldwell as overpay for him, 163 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
However the rest shakes out, Zvada at that price is a win they earned. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Job largely done: running back settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a rangy last line of defense, and a steal at that.
Tyler Warren in slot 62 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Tez Johnson at par in No. 89, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Hayden Conner at pick No. 107 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jamaree Caldwell in the 126th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They robbed the room for Cam Skattebo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Circle this one: Dominic Zvada at pick No. 241 is a fall that decides a draft. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
